British Columbian Wins in Home Province on International Stage

The Women’s White Spot | Delta Road Race was competitive right until the end, but was won as part of a clean-sweep by American Kendall Ryan.

The 2018 Tour de Delta presented by the Beedie Group kicked off BC Superweek, Canada’s biggest professional road cycling series. The crown jewel of the weekend was the White Spot | Delta Road Race, which is the only Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) certified race in British Columbia. The race offers locals and visitors the rare opportunity to see elite men’s and women’s cyclists from around the world compete for ever-valuable UCI points, which are needed for international competition like the World Championships or Olympic Games.

Over the course of three days, the cyclists made their way through North Delta, Ladner Village, and Tsawwassen, drawing large crowds to watch the thrilling races. For the men, Adam de Vos from Victoria, British Columbia captured the Delta Road Race title, while American Eric Young took both the North Delta Criterium on July 6 and the Ladner Criterium on July 7. American Kendall Ryan swept the weekend on the women’s side, winning all three races, including her second Delta Road Race.

In a weekend that saw the thrill of world-class cycling race through the streets of Delta, it was the homegrown talent on the men’s side that took home the top spot at the White Spot | Delta Road Race on July 8 at the 2018 Tour de Delta presented by Beedie.

“It is always so phenomenal to see some of the best cyclists in the world congregate in our community,” said Mayor Lois E. Jackson. “We are proud of the event organizers, our sponsors, and the hundreds of volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to make this event the success that it is, year after year.”

The event saw over 200 racers from 14 countries, including Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, England, Ireland, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Guatemala, United States, and of course, Canada.

BC Superweek continues through July 15 with the New West Grand Prix (July 10), Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix (July 11), Giro di Burnaby presented by Appia Development (July 12), PoCo Grand Prix presented by Dominion Lending Centres (July 13), and Tour de White Rock presented by Landmark Premiere Properties (July 14 – 15).
